Marcus Fischer – Monocoastal

I know it has been long overdue to finally publish some thoughts about the ‘Monocoastal’ release by Marcus Fischer. After already giving it some attention in my ‘Album of the year 2010′ list – and it didn’t appear only in my year’s end list by the way – and opening the ‘electroacoustic tales guide’ with the Marcus Fischer guide site (click Marcus Fischer link above in the text to visit his presentation and short interview) I finally got my ass in gear to write down some thoughts about ‘Monocoastal’, released through 12k.

The experimental guitar-based pieces perfectly sit in the row of latest 12k releases, being embedded in rich but decent low-fidelity textures and field recordings. The calm arrangements and the processed acoustic sources create this wonderful minimalistic atmosphere that allows the listener to give attention to every single tone. And the brilliant sound design is as understated and natural as the latest Taylor Deupree releases were. So it seemed to be a logical consequence of this album that we can now look forward to a Deupree + Fischer collaboration this year. The opening ‘Wave Atlas’, ‘Shape to Shore’ and ‘Between Narrow and Small’ are the finest pieces of the ‘Monocoastal’ album in my opinion. They stand out with their wide range of dynamic expression and also their tonal amplitude. It’s that sort of unpredictable minimalistic music that still fascinates me. Highly recommended.

The ‘Monocoastal’ cover artwork is one of the most interesting photographs of the 12k series so far by the way, I think. It shows a brilliantly coloured photograph taken by Marcus Fischer.
