It’s the newest Fang Bomb release and a quite special one – ‘Body Curves’ by I Am A Vowel. Released as a limited 7″ vinyl (there are only 200 copies for the world) it comes with a haunting cover artwork that immediately reminded me of the wonderful cover design that appeared on the self-titled Bersarin Quartett debut album. Certainly it’s not really comparable to each other, even the atmosphere isn’t the same, but somehow I felt a similar ‘WOW’ factor that is caused by these expressive sort of portraits.
The four tracks on ‘Body Curves’ are vocal-based drones with a subtle sombre but also dreamy impact. Sometimes it really appears to be a bit grouper-esque, especially the eponymous final track ‘Body Curves’. This also is the only track on that release with a steady kick creating sort of a beaty element. The two ‘Scarlette’ versions are wonderfully spoken pieces – the voice is really beautiful indeed! Though I wouldn’t call it “drone pop” (Fang Bomb does, but I’m neither good at categorizing music nor do I like these genre names at all) I definitely agree that “I Am A Vowel does actually open your ears. It happens in the most discreet way, quietly touching your cochlea as well as the vestibular system.” [quoted from the Fang Bomb release text]
So these eleven minutes of discreet sound and a beautiful voice accompanied by well-considered droning material are a highly recommended purchase. And after ‘The Black Sun Transmissions’ by Jasper TX it’s another stunning Fang Bomb release.
